Friend of Peregrine Salon Kevin Werbach, a fellow Whartonite (as of December 1st!), has been appointed to Obama’s FCC transition team. This is great news for those of us who believe in net neutrality! Kevin is the driving force behind the yearly Supernova conference, and this year, the theme was Privacy and Security in the Network Age.

Kevin has a Second Life account (one of the few people who has been allowed to have their RL name as their SL name, along with Jaron Lanier, Cory Doctorow, and several others), and has appeared in world several times. He’s also quite a big fan of local Philadelphia music. This selection makes me thrilled with the direction Obama is taking us technologically, after years where technology advancement has taken a back seat to various other issues.

Also named Obama’s FCC transition team was Second Life resident and University of Michigan law professor Susan Crawford. She’s had some interesting commentary on intellectual property rights in virtual worlds over the years.

It is wonderful to see virtual worlds gaining a new level of legitimacy!
